PAIN RELIEF In the present times in China and other countries hypnosis is used as an anesthetic and even used in some major surgery without the patient feeling any discomfort at all. Hypnosis was first used in the UK over a hundred years ago by doctors to carry out operations without the patient feeling any pain. I have personally taken a client to hospital for an operation on her womb with no other anesthetic other than hypnosis. I have helped clients with terminal cancer to reduce chronic pain to a pleasant warm tingly feeling. In a TV program several years ago Paul McKenna whilst in the USA and at one of the Universities demonstrated using hypnosis whilst his hand was held in ice for several minutes. It was shown that there were changes in part of the brain during this experiment, but not the part of the brain usually associated with anesthetic and yet he felt no pain. Physical and emotional pain is shown to make changes in the same parts of the brain thus showing that mind and body are both linked. Sometimes a physical illness can be remissed by dealing with an underlying mental condition. So hypnosis can be a great help in reducing pain. However as pain is a signal of something out of balance its important that as an ethical therapist I would NOT attempt to remove a pain completely and certainly would require a persons GP's approval and co-operation prior to working with chronic or long term pain management.
